For its latest production, The Shakespeare Company will once again be taking on an absolute classic in the canon of world theatre, which at the same time is about a topic of burning relevance today.
Bertolt Brecht’s “Mother Courage” (Mutter Courage) addresses the question of whether profits can be made from warfare without moral, mental and physical desolation. Can one, as the formulation goes, “indulge in just a little war to do a nice bit of business”?
It does not work out. And Anna Fierling, alias Mother Courage, loses all her three children, one by one, to the war.
Together with the actors of the Shakespeare Company we will also be exploring the question of what war means for us here, for we experience war mostly via the media and we feel its consequences, e.g. the refugee crisis, hardly at all here in the Engadine.
Are we, nevertheless, duty bound to do anything against wars taking place elsewhere in the world? Are we shaken and affected deeply enough to actually change anything?
We have asked ourselves these questions frequently in the process of reading this great work with all its bitter wisdom and its ambiguous and complex characters and are looking forward to presenting this huge project on the stage of the Zuoz Globe from 17 – 20 February 2017.
