In Shakespeare’s probably most famous comedy four unhappy lovers stumble around, helplessly lost in a forest during a summer’s night – under the spell of the unpredictable feelings and magical powers of the Elven King and Queen Titania and Oberon. Much to the delight of Puck, the elf, their world is suddenly turned on its head and no one knows anymore who exactly loves whom or who is fleeing.
At the same time a highly enthusiastic group of actors is rehearsing the drama of Pyramus and Thisbe, which they would like to stage in honour of Theseus and Hippolyta at their wedding. Even the actors do not remain immune from the tricks and intrigues of Oberon and Puck and are also drawn into the tangled web of emotions. The night brings many things to light, order sinks into chaos and the actors are turned almost into beasts.
But it is only a game after all, a comedy, a riot of fun for the Puck in all of us.
