Learning Support

The Learning Support assists students in the following areas:

Study coaching

It is not always a lack of talent or application which is at the root of unsatisfactory academic performance. Frequently, it is the absence of effective learning and study strategies or there are difficulties with concentration or perception. In such cases, a programme of targeted study coaching is recommended with a focus on addressing individual weaknesses.

Private lessons / remedial courses

For students with gaps in their knowledge or difficulties in a certain subject we can organize private lessons or remedial courses with a qualified teacher.

Special Educational Needs

Students have a special educational need if they have a learning problem or disability that make it more difficult for them to learn than most children their age. They may be diagnosed with dyslexia or dyscalculia or with ADHD or ASD.

Gifted and talented students

At our school students with special gifts and talents can benefit from additional measures to develop their skills. They choose a focus of interest and work independently or in study groups on challenging projects with the support of a teacher.

Homework Support

Private tuition or support programmes in addition to regular class lessons are available for students with special learning needs and for those who need to catch up in certain subjects.

External specialists are available to help and support students with special learning needs (dyslexia, dyscalculia, etc.).

Study Hour

In our daily study session of 45 or 60 minutes, students do homework and prepare for tests and examinations. Tutors are available to help students who have questions and need support, so that they are optimally prepared for the next day and upcoming exams. Study time takes place daily from Monday to Friday.

Pupils who do not reach the required grade point average of their class have to attend extra study time. This extra study time of 80 minutes takes place Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning.

College Counselling

The Lyceum Alpinum has a unique and diverse student body. Every year, our graduates begin degree courses at colleges or universities in Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Britain, the United States, Canada or Australia. Heather Thompson Cavalli and Hannah Felce are the university counsellors at the Lyceum Alpinum. Together with boarding house staff and teachers, they help students to make the right choice for their future.

The process begins in 10th grade (DIS4/M4) when students choose their subjects for the crucial final two years with the help of a Morrisby profile assessment. They can also begin preparation for university entrance exams such as SAT, IELTS, LNAT, BMAT, UKCAT, TSA, PSA and many more. In 11th grade contact with Mrs Thompson Cavalli and Ms Hannah Felce intensifies as students begin choosing their next path of study at university. Over the summer, they start work on their college essays, prepare for interviews and generally start the application process.

The most important point to remember that it’s not about finding the best university, but about finding the best fit.

Deadlines and tests – Standardised tests at the Lyceum Alpinum

The Lyceum Alpinum is now a test centre for three standardised tests:

1. SAT (www.collegeboard.com)

2. IELTS (www.britishcouncil.ch/exam/ielts)

3. Oxbridge university entrance test

Students who are interested in studying in the United States are strongly advised to take the SAT at the school. There are special tutorial groups in English and Maths to help students prepare for this test.

The IELTS is an English test which is now recognised by higher education institutions all over the world.

The Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz is also an Oxbridge testing site.

For more information on any of these tests please contact Heather Thompson Cavalli or Hannah Felce.

Some advice:

  • Decide which US or Canadian colleges you might be interested in and find out specifically what their standardized testing requirements are.
  • Create a timeline for yourself of test dates, registration deadlines and application deadlines. Do this as early as possible!
  • Register for tests early! There is no point in waiting until the day before registration closes when you could register today.

Latin course Latinum”

After completing obligatory Latin classes in 8th and 9th grades (classes 2 and 3) students can attend optional Latin courses. In total, the Latin courses last 4.5 years, finishing with a certificate in their penultimate semester. Universities accept this Certificate as Latinum”. As a consequence, students in possession of this document do not have to take any Latin for courses of study requiring Latin.
Latin course

German as a foreign language

Non-German speaking students take a placement test and, based on the results, are assigned to small groups according to their age and any previous knowledge of the language. The courses are taught by specialist teachers.
