Football Development Tour to England

Chelsea and Fulham Premier League Football clubs were our hosts for a very successful football development tour to London England during the Easter holidays 2010.

The pupils from the Lyceum Alpinum were able to develop their football skills under the guidance of the academy coaches of two of the English Premier Leagues top professional clubs. Our first three days of training were at Chelsea Football Club's Cobham training ground one of the most modern state of the art training facilities in world football. The boys and girls followed in the footsteps of Michael Ballack, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba running through the warm ups, passing and shooting drills with great enthusiasm and effort.

Chelsea Football Club was followed by two more days training with Fulham Football Club where we had the privilege to watch the first team players train under the guidance of ex Swiss national coach Roy Hodgson.

Our feast of football continued with a Trip to Stamford Bridge to watch Chelsea Football Club versus Aston Villa Football Club with the home team producing one of the best performances of the season with a 7 - 1 victory. We then got a glimpse into the footballer's world as we toured the Stamford Bridge stadium to see the dressing rooms, media centre and felt what it would be like to run out of the player’s tunnel.

Football was not the only theme of our trip as off the pitch we also had a busy program of cultural delights. We saw London from above aboard the London Eye, enjoyed some adrenaline thrills at Thorpe Park and had a traditional London night out at the We Will Rock You theatre show. And of course no trip to London would be complete without some shopping at Regents Street and Covent Garden.

The tour was a great way to develop the pupil’s football skills and all the players showed great progress in their playing abilities which will hopefully correspond to excellent results on the pitch as the new football season approaches!

Rugby Tournament Report - Le Rosey 7th/8th November 2009

This was the Lyceum's first time at the Le Rosey tournament and despite our inexperience, everyone was excited at the prospect of testing themselves against the other rugby-playing Swiss International schools.

Our first game could not have presented a greater challenge as we were drawn against tournament regulars and competition favourites the International School of Geneva. Many of the Geneva team played regular club rugby and this proved decisive as we lost the game 15 - 0. In our preparations for the weekend, defensive organisation had been our number one priority and our players performed fantastically well against strong, fast and very experienced opposition. Our defensive heroics however had taken a big toll; Alex Becker broke his collar bone making a tackle and Yannick Michaelsen damaged his knee ligaments in a collision. Interestingly, their replacements, Luca Gubelin and Carl zu Ortenburg were later voted joint men-of-the-match for their outstanding play on debut.

Our second game was against our "old friends" the Zurich International School. Having been beaten by ZIS five tries to zero back in April, we knew what to expect. Stalemate dominated the game with both teams cancelling out attacks with fierce defence. However, ZIS coped better with the wet and slippery conditions we lost the game 10 – 0. Even so, a good performance and an impressed ZIS coach later described our progress since April as "phenomenal!" As in the first game, Dominik Koester deserves special mention for some aggressive tackling.

Day two started badly with three more injuries surfacing from the day before. Unfortunately, Konstantin Hofer, Konstantin Blecker and Matej Sakota would be spectators only. Our next match was against the Lausanne American School and for our team of walking wounded it was a must win game. Unlike the previous two games we kept possession brilliantly and were able to build attack after attack. The pressure eventually told as Captain Leopold Albrecht made history scoring the Lyceum's first try. The second half followed the same pattern with Leo adding another wonderful solo try and the game was won 12 – 0.

Our final game against College du Leman saw another typically defiant defensive performance against experienced opponents. Sadly we lost the game 10 – 0 and although we were an exhausted group on the way home, we could be proud we had upheld the Spirit of Zuoz. We finished an encouraging 6th out of 8 and even the organisers described us as the "surprise team of the tournament".

Cricket Tour to Barbados - October 2009

How does one judge the success of a sports tour? If the key criterion is simply winning matches, then the school's cricket tour to Barbados during the October holidays can only be described as a complete failure as we lost every game. If, on the other hand, your judgement is based on other factors such as individual player development, sheer fun and enjoyment, the opportunity for new experiences, fostering new and strengthening existing friendships, cultural and social awareness, tolerance, respect and an unexpected appreciation of fried flying fish with rice and peas, then I am happy to report that Barbados 2009 was a complete and unmitigated success!

The statistic played 5, lost 5 simply does not do justice to the quality of the opposition we faced, the grass pitches we had to familiarise ourselves with, the environmental conditions we had to acclimatise to and, more importantly, it does not do justice to the effort and commitment of the Lyceum players. In truth, we were completely outplayed in three of our matches against St. Lucy's School, Isolation Cavaliers and Alleyne School. However, we could or perhaps should have won our other two games against Alma Paris and Princess Margaret Schools. It is no exaggeration to state that the game of cricket is fundamental to the culture of Barbados. It is used to promote everything from the locally distilled rum to AIDS awareness. Bajan youngsters grow up with the sport, even the 15 and 16 year-olds we faced had been playing the game for 10 years. Consequently, when they batted, they hit the ball hard. When they bowled fast, they were accurate and aggressive. When they bowled spin, they were unbelievably consistent and deceptive. And when they were fielding they didn't drop catches and they put our batsmen under huge amounts of pressure. Many coaches advocate that the best way to improve is to play against stronger opposition. I guarantee that every single one of our students has returned a better player.

Batting for the Lyceum, Alex Heuberger and Renato Buchi scored well, as did Yannick Michaelsen and cricket assistant Hans Mai with 58 and 70 runs respectively from our 5 games. Christopher Semmelmann, Kevin Michaelsen and Hans again impressed when bowling taking 18 wickets between them, whilst Yannick achieved the rare distinction of taking 5 wickets in a single games. However, the Player of the Tour was an easy award to make. Henry Wenk again proved himself to be an outstanding all-round cricketer. From our 5 games Henry scored 133 runs, averaging 26.6. He also took 14 wickets whilst bowling and as vice-captain did a fantastic job of supporting captain Franziska Kuenburg.

Away from the cricket ovals, we enjoyed all that the island of Barbados has to offer its visitors; a catamaran cruise, an island tour, snorkelling with turtles, surfing, deep sea fishing and eating our catch of Tuna and Wahoo, traditional cultural entertainments, beach parties, jet skiing, shopping in the capital Bridgetown and of course, several impromptu games of beach cricket with palm trees shading us from the hot Bajan sun. Is Barbados one of the best places in the world to play cricket? Absolutely! Was the tour successful? Definitely!

Grison's Middleschool Championship Football
We are the Champions!

The Men's Football Team of the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz under coach Michael Steinhöfner showed excellent team spirit and dedication and deservedly won the title of State Champion. Captain Leopold Albrecht and forward Aguinaldo Ramos deserve special mention as goalgetters of the tournament as does Goalkeeper Christopher Ober, who held a penalty in the decisive match against Chur. Congratulations and well done!

BMM Basketball Report 2009

If truth be told, the Lyceum Alpinum basketball teams travelled to Chur for the annual BMM tournaments with realistic, rather than optimistic expectations. Despite being the defending Boys and Girls Champions, the leavers from the previous summer had left both teams stripped of key players and big game performers. Nevertheless, training and preparations had been thorough and new students were recruited to fill the vacancies. The Boys team in particular was given a huge boost when some athletes from other sports converted to Basketball for the first time.

Both teams started the tournament surprisingly well, with the girls keeping possession, being well organised in defence and making the most of their attacks. Encouraged by early scores the boys played some exceptional basketball and confidently held the lead in most of their games. Consequently both teams cruised through the pool stages only losing one game each and qualified for the finals with ease. The results were as follows:

Boys Girls
Kanti Chur - Won 31 : 10 Kanti Chur - Lost 26 : 10
Surselva - Won 43 : 5 Schiers - Won 20 : 11
Academia - Won 21 : 4 Academia - Won 20 : 6
Schiers - Lost 26 : 10 Surselva - Won 21 : 7
Davos - Won 16 : 9

The boys scoring was worthy of a specially mentioned as they scored a total of 105 points in their 4 games conceding only 45. This calculates to a superb average of 28 points per game, even more remarkable when you consider the games were only 12 minutes each way.

In the finals, both teams were matched against the only team to beat them in the pool stages. Sadly, despite a determined fight, history repeated itself and the results were the same. Therefore both teams finished the tournaments in 2nd place. After winning both trophies in 2008 we could be justifiably proud that we had defended them fiercely in 2009.
